Nonprofit Milk Banks Dispense Record 11 Million Ounces of Donor Milk in 2024: A 10% increase reflects growing demand for life-saving nutrition for medically fragile infants

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 5, 2025, Fort Worth, TX – The Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) proudly announces that its network of nonprofit milk banks dispensed a record-breaking 11 million ounces of pasteurized donor human milk in 2024—a 10% increase from the previous year. This milestone underscores the growing reliance on donor milk as a critical nutritional intervention for infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and beyond.

HMBANA Executive Director Lindsay Groff highlighted the impact of this achievement, stating, “Every ounce of donor milk represents a baby receiving essential nutrition that can mean the difference between survival and complications. This milestone reflects the generosity of milk donors, the dedication of our nonprofit milk banks, and the unwavering support of healthcare providers and families.”

HMBANA’s 32 member milk banks operate under rigorous safety and clinical standards, ensuring equitable access to donor milk for medically fragile infants. As demand for donor milk continues to rise, the need for increased awareness, milk donors, and financial support remains critical.
